Hiwa-i-Te-Rangi Rectangle Earrings
by Nichola
The pattern on these earrings by Nichola are inspired from Hiwa-i-Te-Rangi- one of the nine stars of Matariki — the star that we send our hopes and aspirations to for the forthcoming year.
The word hiwa means vigorous of growth, and it is to Hiwa that Māori would send their dreams and desires for the year in hope that they would be realised.
Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in midwinter and for many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year.
Inspired by her heritage and upbringing as a woman of Māori and Pakeha descent, Nichola Te Kiri creates jewellery, fashion and homewares for her label Nichola. She believes in the importance of mahi- storytelling, through shared stories the taonga of her work comes alive, creating a unique contemporary Māori Design.
