First published in 1946 as Myths and Legends of Māoriland, this book went on to win an Esther Glen medal for the best children s book in 1947. Now known as Māori Myths & Legendary Tales, this popular collection of Māori folklore has been reprinted numerous times over the years and continues to be in demand. The collection is inspired by the author's desire to make available a popular guide for all New Zealanders to treasure their heritage of ancient story.
Dennis Turner's black and white line illustration features throughout the book and the cover artwork is based on the Rangi and Papa mural Te Wehenga O Rangi Rāua Ko Papa, by highly acclaimed artist Cliff Whiting, which now hangs in the Beehive in Wellington.
