This Hei Tiki has been carved from New Zealand Kahotea pounamu (greenstone/ jade) by Deane Moreton who is based in Hokitika, South Island.

Hei tiki are highly prized in Māori culture, often passed down within a family, gaining mana (prestige) through subsequent generations. It is believed that the tiki can serve as a kaitiaki (guardian) for the wearer.

This Hei Tiki has been carved from New Zealand Kahotea pounamu (greenstone/ jade) by Deane Moreton who is based in Hokitika, South Island.

The Hei Tiki is the Māori representation of the human form and one's ancestors. Some believe that Tiki was the first man while others believe that he created the first man.
‘Hei’ denotes an object or garment worn around the neck and ‘tiki’ is used to describe humanoid forms carved from pounamu (Nephrite jade), wood, bone or other materials

Pounamu is the Māori name for greenstone or nephrite jade which is only found in the South Island. It is an extremely tough material and is said to absorb the owners essential spirit, feeding it back to them and enhancing their strength.
Kahotea Pounamu is a pounamu with white streaked or flecked.

Deane Moreton learnt his craft whilst working alongside his father in the family Pounamu/Greenstone business. Deane has over 30 years’ experience in sourcing and handcrafting New Zealand Pounamu and his designs are a blend of traditional and contemporary designs, inspired by Aotearoa’s rich culture and natural beauty.
