This beautiful sculpture has been hand-carved from New Zealand pounamu (greenstone/ jade) by Ric Moor. The Matua rests on a stand made from New Zealand greywacke stone. The Matau is the Māori name for fishhook, and is a symbol of determination, strength, provision, and safe travel over water.

This beautiful Matau sculpture has been hand carved from New Zealand pounamu (greenstone/jade) by carver Ric Moor. The matau rests on a stand which is made from a New Zealand stone which is made up of basalt, volcanic ash and coral with the surface on one side rough and the other smooth.

The Matau is the Māori name for fishhook and is a symbol of determination, strength, provision and safe travel over water. The wearer provides friendship, support in times of need and love. As a result, prosperity ensues.

Pounamu is the Māori name for greenstone or nephrite jade which is only found in the South Island. It is an extremely tough material and is said to absorb the owner’s essential spirit, feeding it back to them and enhancing their strength.

Ric was born in the Bay of Islands where he spent much of his youth carving bone, stone and working with silver but now lives on the West Coast of the South Island. He has been carving for many years and loves working with pounamu because of its permanence and cultural significance.
