Knit Shepherds mission is to create timeless, well-crafted textile products that speak to Aotearoa’s people, places, and natural world.

Knit Shepherd is a textile design studio based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland and is owned by Sarah Cox. Growing up, Sarah learned to hand-knit and has always enjoyed learning new techniques or finding a new yarn quality to work with. Sarah has worked as a textile designer for film and television and hand-knitting industries locally and internationally. Over the past five years Sarah has explored the use of digital knitting machines and love’s combining both hand and digital crafts to push both practices. Every one of Sarah’s designs starts out as a hand-knit sample, then she programmes a digital knitting machine so it can imitate hand-knit stitches.

Sarah’s designs take inspiration from the natural world of Aotearoa. Her Arapawa Blend yarn is 90% Otago Polwarth wool and 10% Arapawa wool. Arapawa is a wild breed of sheep descended from a flock thought to be left by Captain Cook on Arapaoa Island in the Marlborough Sounds on his last voyage. Her River Tribute design is an ode to her childhood spent playing in the rivers of Taranaki.

All of Sarah’s designs are produced locally, employing a low waste process.
