Darin Gordine grew up in Hastings, Hawkes Bay. Having trained as a fashion designer at Whanganui Polytechnic, he was lucky enough to land a job in the costume props department of a production company in Auckland as a costume props technician for the 'Xena - Warrior Princess' and 'Hercules - The Legendary Journeys' television shows. It was there that he was first introduced to leather working.
In 1998 he joined the highly acclaimed Weta Workshop team and has been collaborating with the talent of their amazing designers and skilled technicians to create leather costumes, armour, and weapons. He has been privilleged to work on some great film projects with Sir Richard Taylor and his incredibly talented team over the years including - ‘The lord of the Rings' trilogy.
Darin designs, cuts, embosses, dyes, ages, polishes, stitches and assembles, every leather item he creates. 'Kiri' is the Maori word for skin, bark or leather. 'Awa' is the Maori word for a river, a furrow or a groove. By joining the two together 'KIRIAWA' becomes a new word for decorated or embossed leather
