This beautiful Matariki Whetū Necklace features a stunning Mother of Pearl Seashell accentuated by a tiny sparkling CZ crystal charm. It has been made with fine brass layered in rose gold / sterling silver and covered with a clear tarnish resistance to protect them from the elements.
Matariki is the Māori name for the group of stars also known as Pleiades or the Seven Sisters. It has two meanings, both referring to the star cluster; Mata Riki (Tiny Eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God). The mid-winter rise of Matariki in the pre-dawn sky signals the beginning of the Māori New Year.
Little Taonga means treasure or prized possession in Maori culture. Each design captures a little something to be treasured - the places, nature, and icons that make Aotearoa New Zealand so special.
Little Taonga treasures are designed by Ngāi Tahu and Rangitāne artist, Cezanne Lyons, drawing inspiration from her culture and love for Aotearoa. Cezanne lives in Mangamaunu, a picturesque coastal settlement just north of Kaikōura, where much of her inspiration comes from being surrounded by spectacular nature, wildlife, and rich culture.
