Kōwhaiwhai is a traditional artform that communicates tribal narratives. It is an abstract visual artform, mostly painted, and seen in the rafter (heke) patterns of meeting houses (wharenui). The koru and kape are normally the main elements that are used to create a Kōwhaiwhai pattern. The Kōwhaiwhai pattern on these earrings refer to growth.
Inspired by her heritage and upbringing as a woman of Māori and Pakeha descent, Nichola Te Kiri creates jewellery, fashion and homewares for her label Nichola. She believes in the importance of mahi- storytelling, through shared stories the taonga of her work comes alive, creating a unique contemporary Māori Design.
Made out of a green Perspex and finished with silver plated hooks.
