Oval Pounamu Pendant
This Oval pendant with lashed cord detail is hand carved from New Zealand pounamu/jade.
New Zealand pounamu is known as Pounamu by Māori, nephrite by geologists and was named greenstone by Captain Cook. Highly prized by Māori who named the South Island “Te Wai Pounamu” (the water in which Pounamu dwelt). It is mainly found in two turbulent West Coast Rivers, the Arahura and Taramakau, which flow from the Southern Alps to the Tasman Sea. It is an extremely tough material with a smooth, oily feel, and is said to absorb the wearer’s essential spirit, feeding it back to them, and enhancing their strength.
