This beautiful Mere Pounamu is made from New Zealand Tangiwai pounamu (greenstone/ jade) hand crafted by Deane Moreton who is based in Hokitika, South Island.
The mere pounamu was a traditional Māori weapon designed for close hand-to-hand combat and was used with thrusting, jabbing and swinging blows. The mere pounamu was a symbol of chieftainship and is considered to be one of the most valuable of the Māori short hand weapons.
Pounamu is the Māori name for greenstone or nephrite jade which is only found in the South Island. It is an extremely tough material and is said to absorb the owners essential spirit, feeding it back to them and enhancing their strength.
Deane Moreton learnt his craft whilst working alongside his father in the family Pounamu/Greenstone business. Deane has over 30 years’ experience in sourcing and handcrafting New Zealand Pounamu and his designs are a blend of traditional and contemporary designs, inspired by Aotearoa’s rich culture and natural beauty.
