The Kiwi is a flightless nocturnal bird native to New Zealand, and has become the national symbol for New Zealand. It is known for its long peak, hair-like feathers and retiring nature. Maori traditionally believe Kiwi to be under the protection of Tnae Mahuta, god of the forest. Kiwi feathers are particularly important to the Maori for their use in ceremonial cloaks.
