The Kiwi are a flightless nocturnal bird native to New Zealand, and have become the national symbol for New Zealand. They are known for their long beaks, hair-like feathers, and retiring nature. It is traditionally believed that Kiwi are under the protection of Tāne-Mahuta, god of the forests and birds. Kiwi feathers are particularly important to Māori for their use in ceremonial cloaks.
