The Hei Tiki is the Maori representation of the human form as a pendent or amulet. Hei meaning neck ornament and Tiki meaning human.
Usually crafted in Pounamu (Nephrite) Hei Tiki were highly prized by Maori and were carved over long periods of time. Some Tiki were named and passed down to family members, gaining mana (prestige) through subsequent generations. The wearer of the Hei Tiki is assumed to be clear thinking, perceptive, loyal and knowledgeable.
