This stunning Ipu Iti (small container), is hand-made and hand carved from uku (clay) by Stevei Houkāmau - Ngāti Porou, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Rangitane,

This Ipu iti is a representation of us as people. It is marked with a history and its stories are there for the viewer to interpret and connect to. Like people they represent a past, present and future.

Stevei was born and raised in Porirua. In 2011, she enrolled in a Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts at Toihoukura at the Eastern Institute of Technology. She developed her interest in uku (clay) from Wi Taepa, Baye Riddle and the late Manos Nathan of Ngā Kaihanga Uku, the collective of Māori clay workers. Her work references the indigenous tattoo practices of moko and tatau, customary vessels, matriarchal relationships and growth cycles, to consider connections between past, present and future.
