This is a beautifully detailed pewter Athena Owl ornament.
This owl is an interpretation of a silver tetradrachm (coin) from 5th century BCE Athens. From the late 6th century BCE, the design of Athenian coins was standardised to depict Athena and her sacred bird, the owl.
A great takeaway memento from our previous exhibition - Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes. This exhibition from the British Museum’s world-renowned Ancient Greek collection is the largest selection of ancient artefacts ever loaned by the British Museum to New Zealand.
