This beautiful small fan has been hand-crafted by Marie Vira of the Torba Handicraft Cooperative. It has been hand-woven from cane.
Marie originally joined the Vetimboso Craft Association to further explore her interest in jewellery. As time went on, she began to get more curious about her heritage and decided to join the weavers! Now, Marie and her friends are prolific weavers, passionate about making sure the next generation keep the skills alive. They love to make contemporary products and are always creating new designs.
TORBA Handicraft Cooperative was established in 2018 in Vetimboso Village on the island of Vanua Lava in the northern province of Torba. Through the Torba Skills Centre, under the Vanuatu Skills Partnership, the local community has been supported to transform their skills and products into a significant income-generating activity. Not only is this strengthening the economic resilience of the community, but it is also promoting the value and vitality of its cultural heritage.
