These Māori Alphabet blocks were created as a collaborative project between Johnson Witehira and Pete Bultman from Michigan-based company, Uncle Goose. The blocks were developed as part of Johnson Witehira’s Doctorate Research into contemporary Māori design practice.
The 24 letter blocks feature the Māori alphabet (with macronised letters) alongside numbers, math symbols, poupou figures and tukutuku patterns. The figures can be stacked atop one another and when arranged side-by-side they resemble the arrangement of carved ancestors and tukutuku seen in whare (Māori meeting-houses).
Māori believe language is the life-force of their culture: "Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Māori. Ka ngaro te reo, Ka ngaro taua, pera i te ngaro o te Moa."
If the language is lost, we will perish like the Moa.
Made using sustainable basswood. Printed with non-toxic and mouth safe inks.
Suitable of kids 2 years and over.
Size: blocks 4.5 x 4.5 cm, box 23 x 18 x 4.5 cm
