This Hei Tiki has been carved from pounamu (greenstone) by Moreton carvers based in Hokitika, South Island. Tiki represent the first man born and are associated with fertility. They have become a cultural icon in New Zealand, and are seen as a symbol of good luck and a link to the past, present, and future.

 

This Hei Tiki has been carved from New Zealand pounamu (greenstone/ jade) by Moreton carvers based in Hokitika, South Island. The Hei Tiki (Hei – to tie around the neck/ Tiki – human ancestor) is a carved figure that can be worn as a neck ornament. Usually carved from pounamu it is said to represent the first man born and is associated with fertility.
The Hei Tiki has become a cultural icon in New Zealand and is seen as a symbol of good luck and a link to the past, present and future.
